A few days ago, I was working with a young teacher who was having a
difficult time helping his fourth-grade students write about one of
the books they were reading in class. The problem was the students
didn’t really understand how to write about character. A character
may be static or dynamic. A static character does not change from
the beginning of the book to the end, while dynamic character
changes in some way during the course of the work. This change may
be a positive one or negative one. To help solve this problem of
writing about
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, I gave the
students an interactive writing activity on the computer.
This interactive activity is designed to assist students in
understanding certain important concepts about character by having
them imagine what it would be like to be Tom Sawyer. There is an
on-screen guide which walks them through imaging they are Tom
step-by-step. There were drawings they could easily insert into
their writing document to illustrate what they wrote. And all of
this involved only a few screens, which helped the students without
overwhelming them.
