Not long ago, I talked with a parent who is having difficulty
helping her child with phonics. The problem is the child doesn’t
fully understand the concept of rhyming words. Rhyme is when a
sound in two or more words is the same. The child knows that “dish”
sounds like “fish” and “note sounds like “boat.” At one level, the
child understands the concept, but needs a lot of practice with
rhyming words to know that he understands it and to be able to use
it competently. I show the child an interactive activity on the
computer.
The interactive game is fun and engaging, with an appealing
Flinkster character encouraging the child. The child sees a number
of true-false questions. Each question has pictures of two objects.
In some cases the names of the objects rhyme, and in some cases
they don’t rhyme. The child has to decide if they rhyme (TRUE) or
not (FALSE). He can play with a timer and feedback at the end or
with the computer providing feedback after each answer. And all of
this involves only twenty screens, which helps the child feel a
sense of accomplishment. Now he is ready for more rhyming
words!
