Last month, I talked with a student teacher who was having a
difficult time helping her first-grade students punctuation their
writing correctly. Punctuation for a first grader is pretty
straightforward. They have to learn what to do at the beginning and
end of a sentence. They need to know when and how to use capital
letters and what punctuation marks to use at the end of a sentence.
To help solve this problem, I gave the students an interactive
writing activity on the computer.
The capital letters game is fun and engaging. The question is
always the same, so students can focus on the answers. The answers
animate towards them, keeping the students’ attention. They get
immediate feedback from the computer. And they can even get the
correct answer if they have trouble with a question. And all of
this involves only a few minutes, which helps the students feel a
sense of accomplishment. Now they are ready to play the game
again!
