Last week, I worked with a teacher who was having difficulty
helping his first-grade students use organize their writing. The
problem was the students couldn’t understand the different story
elements. Organizing writing for young children involves writing
sentences that flow. Children must learn to write a story with a
beginning, middle and end. To help solve the problem, I gave the
students an interactive writing activity on the computer.
The Story Studio activity is a fun and engaging activity, with
characters urging the students on. Each story is only four pages
long, which quickly helps the student feel a sense of
accomplishment. There are categories of pictures students can use
to illustrate their stories. Each category corresponds to a story,
so children can write multiple stories. They can easily select and
insert a sentence starter into their story. There is simple word
processing functionality to help them get their thoughts into their
writing document. Now they are ready to write the middle and ending
sentences!
