Last week, I talked with a teacher who is having difficulty helping
her students with phonics. The problem is the children do not fully
understand the concept of syllables. All words have syllables. A
syllable is a word or part of a word. If children can learn to
count the syllables in one syllable words, then they can count the
syllables in two or more syllable words. If children put their
hands under their chin as they say the word, they can count
syllables by seeing how many times their jaw drops. The teacher
uses
FlinkMake to create an interactive activity on the
computer providing her children extensive practice with three
syllable words. It takes only minutes to enter the twenty words and
their audio files.
The interactive activity is graphical and engaging, with an
appealing Flinkster character. Children hear a word and see the
scrambled syllables for the word they hear. They must drag the
syllables to the empty boxes to correctly spell the word. There can
even be extra syllables to make the game more challenging. The
teacher can make twenty words in minutes, providing the children
with all the syllables problems they need.
