Monday, I talked with a parent who is having difficulty helping her
child with spelling. The problem is the child needs extra practice
with his weekly spelling words. Initially, spelling involves
learning the alphabet and associating letters of the alphabet with
words. Spelling at this age usually involves matching the initial
sounds of words to specific letters. Her child understands the
concept and can do the matching, but needs a lot of practice and
creating printed worksheets is extremely time-consuming and the
resulting worksheets are not especially appealing to the child.
Instead of the printed worksheets, the parent uses
FlinkMake
to create an interactive worksheet on the computer. It takes only
minutes because all the graphics were built in.
The interactive worksheet is much more fun and engaging than the
printed worksheets, with an appealing character prodding the child
on. The child sees a number of objects and has to click and drag
the one that begins with the letter shown in the screen. He can
select a picture and hear the word spoken. The parent can make tens
of problems in minutes, providing the child with all the problems
he needs for that letter.
