Last week, I was talking with a parent who was having difficulty
helping his child with spelling. The problem was the child needed
extra practice with his weekly spelling words. Initially, spelling
involves learning the alphabet and associating letters of the
alphabet with sounds. Vowels have two sounds: long sounds and short
sounds. Children have to learn the short and long sounds for vowels
and be able to match these sounds to words that include those
sounds. His child understood the concept, but needed a lot of
practice for the matching to become second nature. Creating printed
worksheets was extremely time-consuming and the resulting
worksheets were not especially appealing to the child. Instead of
the printed worksheets, the parent used
FlinkMake to create
an interactive worksheet on the computer. It took only minutes
because all the graphics were built in.
The interactive worksheet was much more fun and engaging than the
printed worksheets, with an appealing character prodding the child
on. The child saw a number of objects and had to but them in the
correct category: long or short vowel sounds. He could select a
picture and hear the word spoken. The parent could make tens of
problems in minutes, providing the child with all the problems he
needed for that letter.
