Not long ago, I talked with a parent who is having difficulty
helping her child with phonics. The problem is the child needs
extra practice with ending sounds. Her child understands that the
final letter is the last letter in a word and that a consonant is
any letter in the alphabet that is not a vowel. Her child
understands the concepts, but needs a lot of practice and matching
ending consonants with their sounds. I showed the child an
interactive game on the computer.
The interactive game is fun and engaging, with appealing characters
encouraging the child. The child sees a number of objects coming at
him and has to click the one that ends with the sound the child
hears. He can play with scoring and a timer or with the computer
showing the correct answer. And all of this involves only fifteen
screens, which helps the child feel a sense of accomplishment. Now
he is ready for some other ending sounds!
