Yesterday, I met with a teacher who was having a difficult time
helping her fifth-grade students write about one of the books they
were reading in class. The problem was the students didn’t really
understand how to ask the right kinds of questions about the book
they were reading. They could retell the story and most of the
plot, but they couldn’t delve any deeper into the story. The
teacher asked them questions in a class discussion but needed
something to help them write answers to questions that related
specifically to
Amos Fortune, Free Man, the book they were
reading. I gave the students an interactive writing activity on the
computer.
There is an on-screen guide which explains the concept of answering
questions and provides a series of question related to the chapters
of the book. The activity inserted forms right into their document
to better structure their thinking and writing. There were drawings
they could easily insert into their writing document to illustrate
what they wrote. And all of this involved only a few screens, which
helped the students without overwhelming them. Now they were ready
to take a personal view.
