Thursday, I was working with a student teacher helping a small
group of her students with the alphabet. The problem was the
students couldn’t associate letters of the alphabet with words.
Initial Phonics instruction involves children learning the
alphabet. Many learn the alphabet by rote or using an alphabet
song. The next step is to associate the letter they hear with the
written letter. Eventually they have to match the initial sounds of
words to specific letters. The student teacher knew what they
children needed but the textbook and its associated workbook didn’t
actively engage students in a constructivist way. Instead of the
book and the accompanying workbook, I showed the students an
interactive book-making activity on the computer.
The book-making activity was much more fun and engaging than the
textbook and workbook. Each activity focused on a single letter,
reducing the children’s frustration level. For each level, children
could select pictures beginning with the letter from a built-in
library of clipart. For each picture they selected they could
insert a text caption. They could move everything around, get the
page they way they liked it, and print it out. Now they were ready
for some more letters!
