Addition Facts to 100

Last week, I worked with a teacher. She had a small group of students who had some problems with addition. The problem was the students didn’t really understand one of the basic properties of addition that second grade children must know and understand. The commutative property of addition says that two or more addends can be added in any order without changing the sum. For example, 3 + 4 = 4 +3; a + b = b + a. To help solve this problem, the teacher used FlinkMake to create an interactive game on the computer. It took only minutes to enter fifty problems.

The worksheet is fun and engaging, with characters the children can appreciate. Each screen has many numbers the children have to put in the correct order. Children find the next number in the sequence and drag it to the correct box. They continue dragging numbers until all the numbers are in the correct order. They can play over and over again since each time they play the numbers are scrambled. The teacher can make tens of problems in minutes, providing the children with a limitless number of ordering numbers problems.
