Last week, I worked with a teacher. She had a small group of
students who had some problems with addition. The problem was the
students understood the basic properties of addition but they
needed lots and lots of practice. The teacher had used all kinds of
printed worksheets: those that went with the textbook, others that
she purchased at a Teacher Store, and some she had created herself.
The students would do a few of the problems, but they quickly tired
of the dry format. To help solve this problem, I showed the child
an interactive game on the computer.
The game is fun and engaging, with a Flinkster character the
children enjoy. Each screen has five addition problems where the
children need to drag an addition problem to one side of the
“blender” and the correct answer to the other side. If they are
right, the correctly answered problem is display on the results
“door.” If they are wrong, they can try again or ask the computer
to show them the correct answer. After just a few problems, the
students feel a sense of accomplishment. Now they are ready for
addition problems with > instead of =!
